Ishiyama Troupe : Sato-kagura of Bushu  Project

Ishiyama family’s “Sato-kagura” is the most statusy one in the district, which has been succeeded through 10 generations in four centuries, starting from the Genroku period in Edo era(17th century).
Since I came across it by chance and instantly got crushed on it’s mysterious beauty, I have been active to record its performance at various places for preserving and spreading the beautiful tradition by using mainly online media.

*Sato-kagura: kagura performance held somewhere other than the imperial palace

*Kagura: kagurasacred (Shinto)music and dance

*Bushu: the old name of a local district in the northern part of the Kanto area

About Ishiyama Shacyu

Ishiyama family’s “Sato-kagura” is the most statusy one in the district, which has been succeeded through 10 generations in four centuries, starting from the Genroku period in Edo era(17th century). Many discriminative masks are used in the Kagura performances, and the troupe has still kept the mask produced by Kawachi・daijo・ieshige , the number one creator of masks in 17th century.
Now, Ishiyama family’s Sato-kagura is the first designated one as intangible cultural heritage by the Niiza City where they have stationed for their activities.
Especially Ohsumi, the 9th and the father of Hiromasa, the 10th, got the honor to perform in front of the Emperor’s family at the Crown prince’s palace.
The troupe has organized the Bushu Sato-kagura Preservation Association, and held 10 times of its performance to date named as “Sounds of Kagura”.
The Indipendent administrative corporations and trust Cultural Foundation and some other officials have often certified its performance as their furtherance business.
